Paul and Loretta Briedé of Winchester, Virginia, established the Briedé Family Vineyards in 2013. They envisioned creating a vineyard using sustainable practices to grow healthy, flavorful grapes.
The vineyard is a group effort of the Briedé family. Here is a look into their family.
Loretta Briedé is the wife of Paul Briedé. They met in 1978 when Loretta was learning how to fly airplanes, Paul was her instructor. They were married in 1979 and have two children and 4 granddaughters. Riding horses has always been a passion and she was on the back of a horse at age 3. Loretta continues to ride and show today. During a brief 5 1/2 years, she also worked at United Airlines as a flight attendant. The vineyard is a big part of what she does for the BFV, but she wears many hats. She does much of the organization and actual care of the grapes. Wine making is left to her husband, Paul.
Paul Briede, better known as the Flying Dutchman, Paul has always had a deep passion for aviation and beer. He has been flying for over 40 years and drinking beer at every stop. He was making his own homebrews before it was cool, and in 2005 his porter won Best In Category from Sam Adams brewery. Looking for more of a challenge, Paul decided to give wine making a try, and has had wonderful success thus far. He is the Owner and Operator of the Briede Family Vineyards and our wine maker.
Paul Briede Jr
Paul Briede, in many ways, has followed in his fathers footsteps and has a passion for both aviation and homebrewing. Paul graduated from Drexel University in 2009 with a degree in mechanical engineering and currently lives with his family in Seattle, WA working for Boeing as a Flight Test Director. He, and his wife Amy, have helped other biodynamic and organic wineries on the west coast looking to build some tips and tricks to bring back to the winery.
Loves wine! She started drinking good wine back in 2005 when she started dating Paul, all thanks to Loretta and her collection of French wines! Her pallet grew, and it didn’t hurt that she has ties to the Sonoma County area where she had fun educating herself and expanding her pallet! She graduated from Shenandoah University with a degree in Biology but is now a stay at home mother to her two little girls, Malia and Seneca.
Cyrena (Briede) Arnold & John Arnold
Cyrena has been fascinated by the weather since age 5 and went on to pursue a career in meteorology. Her work has taken her from icing and turbulence test flights with NASA contractors, to installing weather stations on the Alaskan tundra, on to the summit of Mt. Washington as a former Director of Summit Operations. Today, she is the Senior Director of Product Sciences for Weather Analytics. Like her mother, Cyrena drinks wine and rides horses in her free time. She also enjoys the 4 seasons of New Hampshire with her husband, John, and daughters Maybelle and Madaket, as they ski, ice skate, hike, waterski, camp, and canoe the days away.
